Instances: several setups on one server
An instance is a whole setup of your game server under a name: files, template and startup parameters. Use it to switch between a survival world and a mod test on the same server.
Instances are in your game server's Instances tab. At the top you see which instance is loaded right now and how many of your Backup slots are in use.
What an instance holds
- All of the server's files, without the recycle bin.
- The game's template, the runtime, the start line and the variables under Startup.
- What the portal knows about the software: the version, an installed modpack, and the plugins and mods installed through the portal.
Databases are not part of it. Ports and address belong to the server, not to the instance: they always stay as they are when you load one.
Save the current state
Press Save current state.
Under Where to save, overwrite the loaded instance or choose As a new instance with a name (up to 60 characters), such as “Survival” or “Mod test”.
Leave Briefly stop the server for this on if you want a clean state; the server starts again afterwards. Switched off, it keeps running, and a world being written at that moment may be saved incompletely.
Press Save now. The steps show how far it is.
Load another instance
Press Load next to the instance. The server stops and gets its files and startup parameters. Before that you choose what happens to the current state:
- Save into the loaded instance: changes since the last save are kept, no further slot is used.
- Save as a new instance: uses another backup slot.
- Move to the recycle bin: the current files stay restorable for 7 days under Files; no backup slot is needed.
With Start afterwards the server runs right away with the loaded instance; without it, it stays off, for example so you can look at files first. You confirm by holding. If the template has changed since the save, the portal takes over what still fits and tells you what it could not, such as a start line of your own after a change of memory.
Rename and delete
Next to each instance are two buttons: the pencil to Rename it and the bin to Delete it. You confirm a delete by holding; it removes the saved version and its backup for good and frees a backup slot. If the instance is loaded right now, the server keeps running with its current files.
Backup slots
Each instance is kept as a locked backup in one of your backup slots, not in the server's storage. A schedule therefore never deletes it, and in the Backups tab it cannot be deleted or unlocked on its own. When every slot is in use, delete a backup or an instance, or book more slots in the Change plan tab (see Change plan and add-ons).
Good to know
- An instance can only be loaded in the same game. Instances of another game are created when you change the game and are loaded there again.
- At most two backups are made in ten minutes; if some were just made, the page says how long to wait.
- While the server is being installed or moved, or while a backup is being restored, you can neither save nor load.
- People you share the server with need the rights to restore backups and to change the setup.
