Console in the browser
A terminal of your VPS or container right in the browser. It works even when SSH cannot be reached, for example after a wrong firewall rule.
Open your server's Console tab. On a VM you see the server's screen as text and sign in as root with your password. On a container a shell opens directly as root.
Using it
- Click into the terminal to type. Esc, then Tab leaves the console again.
- Copy with Ctrl+Shift+C, paste with Ctrl+Shift+V, or use the buttons above.
- Reconnect, resetting the terminal, smaller or larger text and Full screen are at the top as well.
- On a phone there is a row with Esc, Tab, Ctrl+C and arrows, and an input line that sends with Enter.
- No sign-in prompt to be seen? Pressing Send Enter usually brings it up.
Graphical console
On a VM, Terminal | Graphical above the console switches to the server's screen, as if a monitor were plugged in. The choice is kept for this server; the terminal is the default. A container has the terminal only.
- Click into the picture to type; Esc, then Tab leaves it again.
- Ctrl+V in the picture, Type the clipboard and the Type text line send text as key presses, matched to the server's keyboard layout (German or English US; set under Settings). There is no clipboard shared with the server.
- Ctrl+Alt+Del is held until it fires; many systems restart on it.
- New VMs have a graphics card beside the serial console. If an older VM has none yet, the screen shows the serial console as a picture, and Switch on graphics card adds one; the server restarts once for it, the terminal stays.
- It works on a phone too, a larger screen is more comfortable.
Limits
- The server must be running.
- Without input the connection is closed after 15 minutes, after 12 hours at the latest. Under the clock icon at the top and in the line shown after the disconnect you choose 15 min, 1 h, 4 h or Never. A click or a key in the console connects again, as does Reconnect.
- There is one session per server: if someone else already has the console open, everyone sees the same, and everyone's input goes to the server.
- Every opening is listed under Activity.
- People you share a container with need all Setup rights for its console, because it is a root shell.
If a VM's system no longer starts, the rescue system helps; its console appears in the same place.
